Wrapping Things Up!

WOW! What a fantastic year it has been. I can't believe it is already over and the students are on their way to their final year of Elementary school. Here are some of our end of year highlights:

Our final STEM projects were the Lego Hotel and Pipe Cleaner Towers.

Both activities/challenges required a lot of teamwork and planning. They sure have become excellent engineers!

We tie-dyed shirts with sunset colors to match on field day!

We got to have some reading time with our new book: Mr. Terupt Falls Again.
It is such a good book and I hope the students finish it over the summer!

Field day was a great success of course. We got wet, had fun and spent a lot of time in the sun.

Racing through to the end of the obstacle course.

Bust a move!

Wet relay race!

I want to thank all the All-Stars for working so hard this year. They did a great job at knowing when to work and when to play. That is often difficult for Elementary students, but I think they did a fantastic job. Every student made progress and growth in many areas and it was really due to their hard work and perseverance. I can't thank all of their parents enough for supporting them in their path to a great education. I hope you all have a safe, relaxing and fun Summer Break! I will be moving to Arizona in July, but I hope to hear from all of my 5th grade All-Stars as our busy lives move forward. They will always have a special place in my heart.

Love,
Mrs. Carr

Class List of Compliments

Spring Time & The Changing Earth!

Exciting News: Our Westridge Ballroom team has done an amazing job this year (especially considering this is our first year having a team)!

Two of our very own classmates, Rebekah and Andrew, are on the team. They have practiced so much and I was so proud to see them showcase their talent.

Here is Andrew getting ready to start!

Since we met our class goal in February, which was to have everyone in the Homework Club by the end of the month, we won a breakfast party! The faculty made us delicious pancakes with fruit and sausage. Wow!

I also promised the All-Stars a treat for everyone who was in the HW club by the end of Term 3. They definitely earned their ice cream sandwiches!

We are loving everything there is to learn about the changing of the Earth's surface. In this picture we are demonstrating how fold mountains are formed. The earth's plates push into each other, causing folds and uplift in the plates.
We also demonstrated fault block mountains with linguine noodles. When you push both ends toward each other they break and one part of the noodle submerges below the other.

Here are students working hard at creating their personal timeline. We did this to be able to compare our own timeline to the Earth's timeline.

Here we created Earth's timeline on a string and noticed that most of the monumental events (like amphibians, plants and humans first being on the earth) all happened relatively close to each other!
Afterwards, we drew this depiction of the Earth's timeline on the back of our personal timeline. One student had a great realization. He said, "Our personal timeline would be like the size of an atom on the Earth's timeline!"

We also had the privilege to watch a production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream put on by CAS. They did a fantastic job!

Have a wonderful and safe Spring Break!

We've Got Beetles!

After the much anticipated arrival, the chickens finally hatched!

We couldn't get enough of these cute chicks!

They grew incredibly fast and they were all taken home by students who were willing to care for them.

Miss. Brown's butterflies finally emerged from their cocoons.

We had the great opportunity to go to BYU for their Science and Engineering Fair! We learned so much about different fields in Engineering. Here we are in the building where they test different kinds of asphalt and cement for roads.

In this meeting room we learned about the engineers that work to develop different types of planes!

Here is a hexa-copter!

There were different booths that we got to visit and talk with college students about their projects.

We finally got beetles! We were starting to lose hope, but two beetles have finally emerged from their pupa stages!

We can see from this picture a mealworm shedding its skin and turning into a pupa. It was so cool to see this happening right in front of our eyes!

On Thursday, we had our 5th grade State Fair!

Everyone worked so hard to make great posters to present at the fair.

We had a lot of parents, faculty, fourth graders and sixth graders come and visit. Students worked very hard the past couple of weeks to research information about their state. They felt great about showing off their hard work!

What a fun couple of weeks it has been!

Heredity & Animals!

We were so lucky to have a worker from the Bean Museum come to our school and talk to all of the 5th graders about animal adaptations!

We got to see and touch several animals including: a turtle, a tarantula, and a boa constrictor snake.

Each 5th grade class is studying and observing animals. We are specifically learning about heredity in STEM right now. Our class is lucky to have MEALWORMS that will turn into BEETLES!

We had to clean out the containers the other day to give them a fresh habitat. It got a little messy!

I gave the students 45 minutes and they had to compare and contrast two animals with their group. They also presented their information in front of the class. They did a fantastic job!

We think our mealworms might be getting closer to becoming pupas because a lot of them are getting whiter and fatter.

Valentine's Day!

My students do not lack creativity...that's for sure!

It was so fun to see all the different designs the kids came up with for their Valentines boxes.

We even had a moving valentines container: a toy car towing an envelope full of candy and cards! A true STEM student right there!

We also spent the morning researching presidents.

Each student picked one President of America and made a mini book all about their president.

They had fun sharing their books and information about their president.

Happy Valentine's Day and President's Day!
